Our Workflow

Good editing requires human guile and craft, but can be assisted by the newest, most advanced machine technology – Ai. At Wildernis we believe using a combination of both delivers great results in the shortest amount of time, at an affordable price-point.
STEP 1 – HUMAN CULLING
We believe humans are essential to the culling/curating process. Ai can offer some assistance, but it’s inevitably machine-based selection process is flawed.
Ai cannot identify and categorize human emotion. They cannot differentiate between images that are technically flawed, and those that have emotive value. An example is Ai rejecting photos of people with their eyes closed. Sometimes people close their eyes when they are happy, or sad – sometimes these images are beautiful. Another example are story-arcs. Sometimes images need to be selected that are not technically the best images, yet tell the best story. A bouquet toss, or a first look, both require images that show a beginning, a middle and an end. Ai cannot identify and select the images that tell a narrative, or pick the photos that capture the most emotion, because Ai lacks human emotional intelligence.
That’s where our humans step in – our editors and flesh and blood, with long experience editing and curating for wedding photographers
STEP 2 – Ai EDITING

Our Ai software then edits the catelog.
We have a few options (see down below) for the exact look you wish to achieve. You can either use your own style (a short setup process is required) or you can use one of our pre-made editing styles, off-the-shelf.
This step achieves a result very close to the final product – but as with all ai-editing services, it still requires a final finesse. Which is where our third step comes in.
STEP 3 – HUMAN FINISHING

Finally our human editors do a final adjustment. This includes cropping and straightening and a check-over of skin-tones, white-balance, and an overall adjustment of any images that are flawed or inconsistent.
At this stage our editors can also do any explicit custom edits – for example, if you require a percentage of B&Ws in the mix.
Just leave a note in the order form and we’ll do the rest.
Finally, we deliver your finished catelog into your downloads folder, and the wedding is yours.
Trusted by the best.

Why not just use Humans? Or just AI? Why both?
Humans and AI both have strengths and weaknesses. A human is still a far better editor than a machine, but they take a long time to edit, and cost more money. AI is fast and cheap (and surprisingly good), but has some key weaknesses and inconsistencies, and requires work to review and make adjustments. Humans are particularly good at selecting the correct images, and understanding story arcs. They can read notes and adjust their style to different shoots and individual styles. But they plod when it comes to the more structured tasks of color grading and exposure.
The beauty of a hybrid system is that we can get the best out of both humans and the AI network to get the best possible outcome, fast and affordably.
Speed, price, quality.
How much time do your editors spend on each gallery?
This depends on the quality of the profile, but generally we find our editors take about 2-3 hours to cull (“flag”) the images, and about 3-4 hours to review, straighten, crop and make adjustments to the Ai edits to make sure they’re ready. Our humans never spend less than 5 hours on a wedding.
Can I check the culling work when I get my catelog back?
Of course. We flag the images we have chosen and put them in a collection called “Basic Edit”. We also include a collection called “All Images” that contains both the flagged and edited images and the ones that were left out. This way it’s very easy for our clients to review the selections.
What if I have special instructions for my weddings? Notes to pass on?
You can leave notes about each job in the order form. Our editors will read these notes and make sure to follow the instructions. You might also want to leave permanent notes in your editing profile – our editors will read these too.
Can I use my own Ai profile from a third-party provider?
Yes. Several of the larger Ai options on the market allow you to send your Ai profile to other users. You may wish to send us your ai profile and we can use this – but there may be an additional fee (4c/image), for this, since we need to pay this cost at our end. You will also need to specify the exact number of images you want edited so we can calculate this for checkout.
I'm worried about your cullers leaving out an important image. How can this be avoided?
A few points:
1. Our cullers are all experienced editors, and all have shooting experience as well. They will do a very good job at choosing images that will appeal to you and your clients.
2. There is the option to request a target number for us to aim for, or ask for low-threshold culling. In other words, if you anticipate you will deliver 600 images to your client, you might want us to cull to 750 images. This allows are cullers to include images they are not sure about. Then, when you go through and review your curated edits, you can “unflag” more images. This workflow is still fast, but is a “safer” option for those who worry about the selection process.
3. If you’re still worried, consider introducing a technique to your shooting process. Some of our photographers “star” shots they take during the day that they like, or that they worry might be lost during the culling process. This also helps them find key photos later during the review & editing process. These sort of photos might be more artistic, subjective images which personally appeal to the photographer, images that are important for other reasons, or they might be hero shots. Whatever the case, starring shots through the wedding day by assigning a button on the camera can be a great way of “pre-curating” a selection of images before they’ve even been uploaded to the computer. A simple note to us to include starred images will mean that we will include them in your final gallery.
4. Lastly, advice from our founder, Van Middleton:
“At a certain point, a photographer must also treat their craft as a business. This means making business decisions that will help them streamline their processes and workflow. Good business people get help to do low-value tasks (culling, basic editing) so they can focus on high-value tasks (social media, branding, visibility, blogging). This also prevents burnout, which is a big problem in the wedding industry. Shoot more, work less! Let go so you can hang on!”
How do I get started?
Contact us! We’ll help you get onboard.
To begin with, unless we have edited for you in the past, we’ll need a bunch of finished edits from you to build you Ai profile. This is a pretty simple process, and we’ll handle all the backend stuff to make this as smooth as possible. You’ll need to export some edited weddings you’ve done in lightroom and then upload to dropbox or some other sharing app. We’ll take it from there.
After that you can put through your first job!
